I would put forward that the step in between "pub" games and "league" games is commonly known as "scrim" games, short for scrimmage. I would define a scrim as an organized game with a set number of pre-selected players and no team switching, that takes place outside of a league or tournament. I rarely hear the term "pug" used in the scene.
The top level of competition in TF2 is the CEVO league, and I often hear players talking proudly about their CEVO matches. 1v1 TF2 is silly in my opinion. When I want to play Quake, I play Quake.
